With mass adoption, hive becomes an access token, much more valuable as rc's than as a currency.
The second layer is the pressure valve on the price becoming unreasonable.
2nd layer coins have all the advantages and a lower price.
IF you just wanted to move money, at some point it will make more sense to use the second layer.
