I was just getting ready to buy in, I figured it had been around long enough to prove itself, but nope.

Selling hive to buy l2 tokens is selling pressure for hive.
I'm not the one to ask about details on this issue, but you talk to well known people that came out as opposed to it the last time the topic got some attention.

I have no problem with getting l2 votes for holding l2 coins, but when you start taking from the hive pool to support people giving you exit liquidity in your own (fiat) token, that would be an issue.

How much did ray cash out?

The strictures on steem around vote selling were incredibly tight because it breaks proof of brain.
On steem the greedy grubbers won that battle, the restivus got 2 years of developmental retardation and those that paid to play got more to sell when they eventually dumped because they were here only for the money and not the ideal.

I would assert that those strictures have been loosened considerably, and that there are things that could be paid from the pool legitimately.
I have no problem using the inflation from the pool to support the distriator.
Presuming the anti-abuse is sufficient.
