Ethereum is an alternative way of providing a similar level of 'verification' that Bitcoin provides today but not just for cryptocurrency transactions, it can be used for any transaction you can think of that uses the internet. It has been described as being a "next generation bitcoin" (or "Bitcoin 2.0") platform. It provides a decentralized virtual machine or commonly referred to as the 'World Computer'. Ethereum was proposed by Vitalik Buterin in late 2013 and the network went live on 30 July 2015.
