Bank of England's Carney calls for more regulation around the 'speculative mania' of cryptocurrencies
Governor Mark Carney called the huge price moves and volatility "speculative mania."
When asked if there would be a global push for cryptocurrency regulation, Carney said it would likely be a "series of national steps."
"The time has come to hold the crypto-asset ecosystem to the same standards as the rest of the financial system," Carney said.
Carney said the "average volatility of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization was more than 25 times that of the U.S. equities market in 2017.
