Reported by AFP, the explosion occurred at the start of Friday prayers in the second largest city in Libya. As a result of the explosion caused the congregation was injured, damaged the mosque floor, smashed window glass.

Security sources said one of the bombs was kept inside a crate left in the mosque's yard, while another bomb was suspected to be placed on a shoe rack at the entrance of the mosque.
Al-Jala hospital spokesman Fadia al-Barghathi said at least one victim was reported dead and 62 wounded.

A similar bomb explosion also occurred in Benghazi two weeks ago, precisely on 24 January. At that time, twin bomb blasts caused at least 33 people died.

Until now no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, showing the chaos that occurred in the territory controlled by Khalifa Haftar's military power.

The UN mission to Libya strongly condemns the bombing action that caused casualties from civilians.

"Cruel acts like this should not justify a revenge attack, and a quick and impartial investigation must take place immediately and bring the perpetrator to justice," the UN Mission said on Twitter.

Libya has been wracked with violence and divisions since dictator Moamer Kadhafi was ousted and killed in a NATO-backed insurgency movement in 2011.
