You got yourself a super active and very intelligent dog; he is simply bored and doesn't get the stimulation that s/he needs being the breed s/he, so s/he finds himself something else to do, which in your case is destroying things.

Am I correct that he (she?) is a Husky? They love to run and run and run..
Agility might be your answer to wear him out and get him to get calmer.
Or do some mind games, finding toys that have names, that'll tire them too.

And training is good! He needs to learn to sit when you ask him to, and therefore be calm. He gets a treat if he does, food or a toy.. Not all training is regimented, they handle this very differently these days; you should try it if you struggle, you can always give it a miss if it's not for you.
