Weekends are vitally important for re-energising mind and body, so I always made sure in my working days and now in my current retirement working days that I exercise, relax, organise some get aways, social gatherings and barbecues with some house jobs thrown into the mx.
What you want to do and what actually takes place are two different things - I have always found. Of course in my younger working life on the odd weekend it was necessary to spend it working. No way out of it. I don't see myself as any different to everyone else and like others I just get on with it.
While I have thought life would never be slow in retirement I did not expect this weekend to be a horribly busy one. Given my age I considered that nothing would take me by surprise. I have learned to always expect the unexpected.
But no I have not, as this surprise last Friday caught me unawares when a doctor recommended my hubby start an 8-week Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment program this coming Tuesday. The sooner the better we were told. A persistent skin problem on one of his legs developed from radiation treatment last year. This problem needs this special oxygen treatment says our general practitioner and so she referred my hubby.
So began a busy a different kind of long weekend! An extra day has been god send because although busy I managed to get out for a little walk along the path during sunset. Part of me is going to miss walking on the beach and paths everyday but on the other hand I am looking forward to this out of the blue escapade wondering what great sights I will get to experience.
As of this morning after several phone calls the accommodation for the first 2 weeks has just been ticked off. We managed to get into a lodge that is positioned across the road from the Hospital which means no expensive parking bills. I am grateful for the Hospital handing us a list of available Lodges, Apartments and Inns. We live too far away to drive back and forth along the highway to drive to and from Brisbane every day.
And now here I am horribly busy this weekend ticking of jobs to be done before leaving early on Monday morning. You know the usual things like cancelling appointments, mulching and watering pot plants, washing, ironing, packing, charging the kindle and Mac and so on. My mind is constantly in thinking and checking mode asking myself do I need to do this or am I overdoing it?
In a positive light and the only way to be, I am actually seeing the next 8 weeks as an adventure, places to be re-visited and new places to find, walks along the Brisbane River, coffee in new coffee shops and maybe spending a few weeks with our son and his family.
Happy weekend to you all, if only we can hold onto it for a bit longer.

I see myself drinking a coffee or two in this Hospital Coffee Shop over the next 8 weeks.
