The words, 'a wheel just fell off the lawn mower' filled the still quietness in the backyard and the deck. A moment before my husband was racing around the lawn like a bat out of hell pushing the 33 year old mower over the extra long grass in the extra hot mid-morning humidity.
Undeterred, he headed to the garage only to return armed with duct tape, pliers and scissors. It worked long enough to finish the lawn before the wheel fell off again.
Even though my husband is now silver haired and retired he always has been the resident resourceful handy fixit man over our long married life. He continues weaving his practical skills whenever they are needed. Our daughter helpfully suggests a new mower is in order but his answer is always a no with an assurance that it can be fixed. And up to this stage over its long serving life this mower with 3 of its wheels successfully attached and number 4 wheel to be soon fixed, a brand new mower is out of the question while the motor keeps working.
My husband learned the tricks of the fixit trade from his dad during his growing up years. What a role model. I can still remember this lovely easy going tempered silver-haired old man in his later years tinkering and fixing anything broken.
Not surprisingly our two sons are already showing signs of becoming handy resourceful fixers, they have seen it during their growing up years and continue to have a dad who provides the tools and garden equipment when needed.
In the meantime this antique Honda motor mower will continue to mow the grass of our smallish yard and continue to be fixed when needed.
But just maybe I need to to give credit where credit is due to men in general, as they are probably all handymen and fixers in their own right! But hang on, I need my head read, there are women out there who are handy resourceful fixers too. Gender plays no role here.
