Partially disagreeing with the message of the most poignant tender hearted cinematic movie Love Story screened in 1970 is brave and perhaps foolish. As an impressionable 17 year old, the words 'Love means never having to say you are sorry' made a long lasting impression.
While the message holds true with a first deep love during the teenage years and early adult years is it the case for a long happily married lif?. New love is so romantic and the need to say you are sorry never enters the equation. But, new love that turn into a longer term partnership involving the raising of a family, work and running a home is a very different story.
Miscommunication, cross wires, tiredness, over-work, the ever challenging behaviours of kids are fertile grounds for getting it wrong with your partner. Life just gets in the way and being human we are prone to getting it wrong. These are the moments when we realise the hurt we caused our partner, our husband or wife. We can stop in our tracks feeling upset at our actions wanting to say sorry to make up for the hurt and to explain ourselves. Or maybe not. It can be argued that it is love that drives us to apologise and of course it plays a pivotal role. But something else of equal importance makes a loving partnership work, it is like.
Anyone who has lived in a successful relationship attest to not only loving his or her partner, but also liking that person. They go hand in hand. Respect, admiration and friendship comes with like. If your partner matters to you then saying you are sorry for any upsets has to be said.
What are the signs of liking your partner?
Does it matter if you both go to sleep angry with each other after a tiff? Do you want to go to work without apologising? Do you ring your partner back if you get cross in a phone conversation? Do you look forward to the chat at the end of the day, the brief sharing time while children are occupied?
Yes, in my both my personal experience and humble opinion as a mature #silverblogger liking your love and saying you are sorry is paramount to a happy open communicative always sharing partnership with the love of your life.
