As a Greek woman, I have heard about fate all of my life. It is in our culture and stories to believe that there is a greater plan and that everything happens for a reason. Ten years ago my baby sister died suddenly. Dad and I were at lunch waiting for her to show up. She never made it. Her motorcycle was no match for the bus.
Her death seemed senseless at the time. She was in her late twenties and full of life and I still miss her like crazy today. On the other hand, if she had not passed so many other things would not have occurred. My other sister would not have moved down briefly and I would not have gotten to know and love my niece/godchild. She has become like my own child.
My sister might not have gotten a divorce which would mean that she would not have had the opportunity to raise her stepdaughters from her new marriage and she might not have had her second child. My sister and I might not have ended up as close as we now are and I would not have the opportunity to be a snow bird every year. to see her and the kids.
I would not have bonded as closely as I did with my best friend and we probably would not have become business partners. I also would not have realized what a bone head the guy I thought I was in love with is and I probably would have ended up married to and miserably with him.
My family and I would not have become friends with our neighbors, who we had never spoken to until they all showed up on our door. And we might never have known who are true friends are without their having the opportunity to show up and show their support.
There is a huge part of me that wishes I could turn back time and have my baby sister back. On the other hand, I feel her presence with me and see how we are intertwined and have to believe that there is a force greater than us that knows exactly what it is doing.
I would love to know what you all think.
