How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Flag

Since arriving on Steemit three months ago, I have avoided flagging. Because the 'Flag' icon is separated from the up-vote icon, I had the impression it was a more serious undertaking.

I read an article by @timcliff (I think), in which he explained that a down-vote (for that's all a flag really is), is a signal that you think the post or comment is overvalued, in just the same way as an up-vote is a signal that you think it is undervalued. This resonated with me, but still, as a minnow with a small reputation, I worried about reprisals and still didn't flag anything.

@sneak recently posted an article on how he intends to start flagging begging and meaningless comments.

I've now decided with the rise of the bots, and increased level of spam, that it is indeed my civic duty to use the flag. So be warned - it could cost you several cents! ;)

I think if the flag action was placed beside the up-vote action, it might encourage more reluctant, but generally responsible people to participate in cleaning up the network.

Maybe some who have been here longer can explain why it's better where it is though?
