Gigajoule is a project that uses the most advanced technology in the form of power plants in floating power plants. Each floating power plant is mounted on a barge and consists of two turbines with a gas engine SGT-A65. The capacity of the floating power plant is 132 MW. The technology underlying Gigajoule floating power plants is provided by Siemens and each project consists of 4 barges with a total capacity of 528 MW.
Electricity, for the most part, is a worldwide utility that is easily accessible to consumers. But when it comes to the energy industry as a whole, conditions turn into strict regulation, a monopoly, or even complete chaos. Electricity production itself is only half the battle — using existing networks, matching supply and demand and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from their production is a difficult task.
Gigajoule working principle
Gigajoule is ready to implement three projects with a capacity of 528 MW each at various facilities in southern Nigeria, in the immediate vicinity of the gas supply and electricity evacuation infrastructure.
Significant work has been done at each of these facilities to secure production licenses electricity, confirmation of studies on gas supply and transmission of electricity. Additional work includes preliminary environmental approvals, design of floating facilities and infrastructure, confirmation of economic viability, and necessary precursor negotiations to conclude an electricity purchase agreement with the federal government.
Nigeria alone has direct demand for another 10,000 MW. In the rest of Africa, direct demand is 20,000 MW. Worldwide, with the exception of Africa, demand is estimated at another 30,000 MW.
