This is a Canadian production film that mixes suspense, mystery, romance and police drama, directed by Donald Shebib, renowned for being a central figure in the development of Anglo-Canadian cinema, he co-wrote the screenplay with Claude Harz.
Its plot revolves around the investigation of a sexually tinged murder by Detective Brenda, played by Ashley Bryant, known for her participation in the films Private Eyes in 2016 and Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer in 2007.
The investigation leads her to a phone dating app called Nightalk where she joins in trying to find the killer, but all becomes confusing when she hooks up in a virtual relationship with a possible suspect named Tom, played by Al Mukadam, a Canadian-born actor, director and producer known as Ray Brennan in the Family Channel television series Radio Free Roscoe (2003-2005).
The cast also includes Ted Hallett, Art Hindle, Emily Andrews, Rena Polley, Kent Sheridan, Stefano DiMatteo, Martin Doyle, Jim Codrington, William Poulin, Brian Bisson, Jennifer Hui, Eric Fink, Samantha Swan, Lina Yakovlieva, Jen Pogue and Emily Summers.
The action is carried out in a harmonious way and the police investigation is mixed with scenes of phone sex with a high tone and with a certain alert for the spectator about the danger of blind dates by that means.
There are unexpected twists and turns that are surprising but attention-grabbing because when everything seems to be resolved, everything changes and the ending is a surprise.
The film premiered in the Contemporary World Cinema program at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 16, 2022 and in U.S. theaters on May 13, 2023.
The film received mixed reviews with the most notable negative being the technological disconnect, something that is certainly evident to a good observer.
Personally I enjoyed it with my wife and forgetting the flaws it is entertaining.
