This is a very interesting movie that shows the life of three women of color working at NASA at the beginning of the space race, it is based on the book of the same name written by Margot Lee Shetterly and the script was adapted by Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi, the latter was also the director of the movie and had just directed the film St Vincent, starring Bill Murray.
The events that are recreated really happened and the protagonists were Katherine Johnson, an African American mathematician who calculated the flight trajectories of the Mercury project and the Apollo 11 flight to the Moon, Dorothy Vaughan mathematician who excelled in the various groups in which she worked as the West Computing group, in the Analysis Division, and in Computing and in the project to launch satellites into space and Mary Jackson She worked at the Langley Research Center and was the first black engineer at NASA.
In the film these three women are played by Taraji P. Henson who in 2008 had been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Octavia Spencer winner of the 2011 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the film The Helph and Janelle Monáe, accompanied by Kevin Costner who plays the director of the space task force Al Harrison and Jim Parsons as Paul Stafford. And Glen Powell as astronaut John Glenn.
In addition to their lives, the film shows highlights of the incipient American space race, the strong racial segregation and exclusion at that time and the obstacles that had to be overcome to advance in the conquest of space.
It was released in January 2017 and the acceptance of the public was immediate, as well as the film critics who considered it well narrated and with outstanding performances by the protagonists.
The production cost was in the order of 25 million and the collection exceeded 220 million, being nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay without winning any, however it was winner of the Film Critics', Satellite and Actors' Guild awards for Best Cast.
