Today I woke up watching videos of Children's Day celebrations in Venezuela. I saw so many videos of happy children enjoying their day—children at family parties, community celebrations, in shopping malls... And the children in Vargas.
Children and adults who, despite what they had been through, were celebrating, were laughing. It's not that they forgot what they went through; it's that, despite everything, they allowed themselves a moment of peace and joy.
And I started thinking: How many times does the world seem to come crashing down on us? How many times have we had to start over without intending to? How many times have we faced a difficult situation and had to overcome it?
The most impressive thing about thinking about it is seeing that I made it this far, that the difficult situation I went through didn't paralyze me. It brought out a better version of me, allowed me to rebuild and strengthen myself; just like me, you too have your own story of resilience and overcoming obstacles.
And I ask myself: Why is it that despite having my own experience and seeing that other people can start over, why, if we all know stories of overcoming adversity, of resilience, of strength, is it so hard for us to let go? Why is it so difficult to end a situation that is eating us up inside? Why do we prefer to waste our energy, peace, and tranquility on something or someone that is consuming us?
Because control feels like security, it makes us feel that what we've planned and poured our energy into is worthwhile, because "better the devil you know than the devil you don't," because losing control throws us off balance mentally, forces us to see everything differently, to question our own decisions, our actions, and facing that is scary, because we already know that life is going to take a turn, and sometimes we resist those turns, not because they're good, not because they're bad, but because we're not in control; it's uncertain, it's new.
But "you can also win by losing" because trying to be in control and make things work when you can't is exhausting, it drains our energy, steals our smiles, takes away our sparkle, our happiness, and little by little we become bitter.
When we refuse to let go and try to control, we're telling life itself that we distrust the process, the natural way it should unfold. When we cling to controlling everything or something specific that drains or breaks us, we only demonstrate a colossal lack of trust, and we don't truly live, we merely survive each day.
The most ironic thing of all is that we human beings only have control over very few things. Sometimes we think that if we own a house, there's no way we'll lose it, and then an earthquake strikes. We think we have a stable relationship and that nothing will separate us, and then death comes. We think we have a secure job and that we'll never lose it, and then the company goes bankrupt. These kinds of situations happen and show us that only God and life are truly in control.
We human beings don't control, we direct; we act in a way that allows us to sow what we desire and reap what we want in the future. We take the reins of our lives and decide which path to follow, which way to turn, whether to stay in a relationship or a job, whether to let go or stay, whether to choose between good and evil, and which values will guide our lives.
We don't control time, the weather, the seasons, or what others think of us. We don't control what comes and what goes, and yet we try to control it. This stubbornness, this mania, this obsession with control robs us of peace and chains us.
Furthermore, sometimes it happens that when we are most attached to a "truth", when we believe that everything is under our control, when we think that we demonstrate that we have a perfect life but inside we are breaking down, we are pretending that everything is under control when in reality it is fear, it is fear disguised as organization, disguised as control, but when we can no longer take it, the trigger arrives, the loss of control arrives, the breaking point arrives and then freedom arrives.
