// In the previous post we left pending the following exercise.
Hallar los números críticos para la siguiente función: // Find the critical numbers for the following function:
Primero hallamos F´(x) aplicando la regla de la cadena. // First we find F'(x) by applying the chain rule.
Igualamos F´(x) a :// We equate F'(x) to :
Esta igualdad se cumple si y solo si 2x-6=0 y no existe, si // This equality is satisfied if and only if 2x-6=0 and does not exist, if
Desarrollemos // Let's develop
Si 2𝑥+6=0 → 2x=-6 →𝑥=6/2→𝑥=3
Luego 𝑥=3 es un número crítico para la función F // Then 𝑥=3 is a critical number for the function F
Entonces la derivada de F no existe para los valores de x=0 y x=6 // Then the derivative of F does not exist for the values of x=0 and x=6.
Finalmente, los números críticos de F, son://Finally, the critical numbers of F, are:
x=0, x=3 y x=6
// But what is the importance of these critical numbers?
¿Qué obtendremos al evaluar la función en estos números?// What will we get when we evaluate the function on these numbers?
Obviously, for x=3, we will get the point where the tangent line is horizontal to the graph of the function F, and for the case of x=0 and x=6 we will identify the points where the tangent line to the graph of F does not exist.
Hagamos el gráfico de F, con la ayuda de la Calculadora gráfica Desmos.// Let's make the graph of F, with the help of the Desmos Graphing Calculator.
La línea azul es la recta tangente al gráfico de F en el punto: (3, -2.8) // The blue line is the tangent line to the graph of F at the point: (3, -2.8)
// At the points (0,0) and (6,0) the tangent line does not exist, remember that vertical lines have no slope.
Rolle's Theorem
This theorem states that if F is a continuous function on a closed interval [a,b] and differentiable in the open (a,b) such that F(a)=F(b)=0 then there must exist at least one c in (a,b) such that F'(c)=0.
