The Chinese Wall (万里长城 / 萬裡長城) represents a group of defense walls with towers in northern China. All the walls together are 8,851.8 km long (main part of 2450 km), which makes them the largest building in the world. The wall consists of several interconnected or unrelated parts of different age and construction(stone, brick, tamped earth, wood...).
HISTORY
The Chinese were already knowed techniques of wall-building by the time of the Spring and Autumn period between the 8th and 5th centuries BC. The first boundary fortifications hanging on the wall were probably created in the second half of the 5th century BC. These individual sections of the walls were made of treated clay, which was mixed with the straw because of the greater stamina.
At the time of the first Chinese emperor 300,000 soldiers and 500,000 villagers were convicted of forced labor on the construction of the Great Chinese Wall, and later about 1,800,000 peasants were temporary. Thousands of thousands have not survived, and many corpses are buried in the Wall.
Since then, the wall has been continuously erected and fabricated, and today it is known as the Ming Dynasty when it was the last major construction phase. Unlike the earlier fortifications, the Ming construction was stronger and more elaborate due to the use of bricks and stone instead of rammed earth.
CHARACTERISTICS
Before the use of bricks, the Great Wall was mainly built from rammed earth, stones, and wood. Communication between the army units along the length of the Great Wall, including the ability to call reinforcements and warn garrisons of enemy movements, was of high importance. Signal towers were built upon hill tops or other high points along the wall for their visibility. Wooden gates could be used as a trap against those going through. Barracks, stables, and armories were built near the wall's inner surface. It believes that a Chinese wall can be seen from the moon.
WONDER OF THE WORLD
The Chinese wall has become a symbol of national unity and the largest Chinese tourist attraction. Since 1970, it has been opened for tourist tours and visits about 10 million tourists a year. The most commonly visited parts of the Wall around Beijing are. Great Wall is under UNESCO protection. Since the Wall over 2,000 years ago some parts are ruined or missing, therefore, the authorities have passed a law prohibiting the removal of stones, stones and houses near to keep the Wall as best as it is one of the most unusual buildings built by man.
