Moss is a type of plant that does not have true organs, such as roots, stems, and leaves. Even so, mosses have organs that resemble roots, stems, and leaves like true plants. Moss is often called a plant that does not yet have vascular tissue, its body is in the form of a thallus, so it is grouped into thallus plants (Thallophyta). Moss plants are certainly often found in everyday life. The existing moss plants are divided into three classes.

The characteristics of moss plants that you need to know:

  • The habitat of moss plants is usually in humid areas, such as forests, trees, wells to walls and others.
  • The cell wall is formed from cellulose and does not have a lignin-reinforced tissue like the reinforcing tissue in higher plants.
  • Has pseudo roots that function to attach the substrate and drain water and nutrients to all parts.
  • Has many cells and a flat body shape, attached to the substrate with a height of 1-2 cm to 20 cm.
  • Vegetative reproduction, such as the formation of gemma, spores, and fragmentation.
  • This plant undergoes a genetic turn in the generative and vegetative phases (metagenesis), in which generative life is longer than vegetative.
  • Moss plants mostly use the gametophyte phase.
  • Has rhizoids and leaves, but does not yet have true roots, stems and leaves.
  • Moss plants do not have transport vessels so that the transport process in the body uses parenchyma cells.

Moss itself is a plant that is small in size, so generally can not be distinguished between the roots, stems, and leaves clearly. Before we go into the discussion of the characteristics and benefits of mosses based on their classification, now we discuss the characteristics of mosses in general first.

In general, moss has five characteristics that you should know, namely:

  1. Can not be distinguished between the roots, stems, and leaves.
  2. The root is a pseudo root
  3. No vascular bundle
  4. Goes through metagenesis between the gametophyte phase and the sporophyte phase
  5. During the gametophyte phase, mosses can form gametangia in the form of antheridia which produce male gametes and archegonia which produce female gametes
