“Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her. And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.” (Esther 2:15-17)
To be meek is to be lowly, mild and humble. At first sight meek people seem like foolish people who can endure anything and “stomach” all kinds of nonsense. Meek people will rather ignore offences and suffer themselves to be defrauded. In some cases, they may appear to be unambitious in their approach to life. They appear as though they do not want much out of life, but there is more to them than meets the eyes.
Esther falls into this category of meek people, and that was why she easily found favour before her screeners and the king himself. We saw that she required nothing more than the king’s chamberlain appointed for their cosmetics, dressing and make-up.
Here lies the wisdom: while other ladies went into the screening room with a long list of Mary Kay products and Victoria secrets to be demanded; all in addition to what was appointed, Esther trusted the chamberlain to make selections for her, and she demanded nothing more.
If you do not trust the chamberlain who has been with the king all these years, who else do you want to trust. Again, is it not possible that the king himself may have prescribed what the chamberlain gave to the contesting ladies? But all the other ladies had paid consultants and beauty experts to prepare them as they appeared before the king. The king must have said to himself ‘this one smell just the way I want, she looks just the way I prescribed,’ and he loved her for her simplicity.
Meekness may make you look foolish sometimes, but it is a major favour requirement.
