"But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd" (Matthew 9:36 KJV)
There are not too many times in the bible we see that Jesus was moved like He was here. He was not moved because they were sick, no! No mention was made of any physical ailment; rather He saw that they were scattered and faint. His diagnosis was very simple, they had no shepherd.
The Amplified bible further broke down the meaning of those two words, and we will be examining them right now:
They were bewildered: Meaning that they were confused and puzzled
They were harassed: To be harassed is to be constantly bothered, annoyed or attacked. It is to be exhausted with repeated attacks.
They were distressed: Distressed is mental suffering, hardship, to face danger, and to experience poverty and great difficulty.
They were dejected: To be dejected is to be very unhappy, to lack hope due to disappointments.
They were helpless: This means to be defenseless, unable to act effectively, etc.
What was Jesus' diagnosis for all these suffering? The absence or lack of a shepherd. Where there is no Pastor over your life, you are most likely to experience all these kinds of frustration. Instability is a very serious mark of a life where a Pastor is not in sight or not active.
