“But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul” (Joshua 22:5 KJV)
We often hear people say in prayer and in worship of how much they love the Lord, and we even in our private discussions with people we hear them say “I love the Lord with all my heart”. Also, we hear some say of other people “he doesn’t love the Lord”. It could sometimes become very confusing; do people really get to know those who love the Lord based on what they said, or for what they do? We will allow our text to show us know how God wants to be loved today.
To love God, Joshua prescribed the following:
Walk in His ways:
Not just His ways, but all of His ways. God’s ways are in His word. To love God is to love Him by His word.
Keep His commandments:
God wants to be obeyed. Your obedience to God is a proof of your love for Him. He said “If you love me keep my commandments”. John 14:115. There are three ways to obey God; obey His word, Obey His servants set over your life, and obey His Spirit.
Cleave to Him with all your heart and with your soul:
God doesn’t just want to be followed, but He wants to be cleaved to; He wants you to do so with all your heart and soul. It means that when it comes down to it, when there are many choices out there and other things are seeking to discourage you from God, He wants you to cleave to Him with your heart. This is how to love God.
