So this incident happened few days ago, on Wednesday to be precise during my children's school carol of nine lessons.
The school informed us that the carol of nine lessons would start by 10 am prompt. One thing I like about the school is that they don't keep African time. If they tell you that an event is starting at10am, they will definitely start by exactly 10am. Even if it's only two or three parents that are present, they will start anyway.
My car was at the mechanic's therefore i decided to tag around with my neighbor Ifee whose son happened to be in the same school with my girls. I was ready before her thus I had to wait for her since she will be giving me a ride too. We arrived at the school at 10:35am and we received the biggest shock of our lives. The parking lot was filled already, both the lot inside the school compound and the one outside were all filled up. Parents started parking at the road side which was very risky.
We stayed inside the car for another twenty minutes looking for a space to pack our car. Ifee on the other hand did not want to park her car along the road because her car is a pretty big car and the risk of another car bashing it was 50% possible. I stayed back with her inside the car though I desperately want to make my way to the school hall to join other parents. Luck shined on us when the car that brought refreshment for the event drove out. We drove through that tiny path to take up the space. Other parents at our back joined and before the security men knew what was happening they have already closed up the tiny space that was allowed for free movement of cars in and out of the school. This time it was too late to tell the parents to re- park as they all alighted from their cars and rushed towards the school hall.
We spent about two hours listening to the children's Carol of nine lessons. Ifee started feeling a bit sick and suggested that we start heading head. I asked her to wait let me go and check if there was a car that blocked our way out of the school. On getting there, I noticed that there was a little pandemonium between a parent and the security men. The parents obviously wanted to leave but our car blocked his car. He kept shouting at the security men for collecting just our car key and not our phone numbers too. I went back and told Ifee what was happening.
The man who was burning in anger was a little relieved when he saw us. The security men told Ifee that they were finding it hard to open her car. Ifee collected her car key and opened her car with so much ease. We entered inside the car and kicked the ignition.
Then the gear suddenly refused to enter drive.
We were not only embarrassed that the car was acting up but the situation we were in made the matter worse. The man was inside his car behind honking for us to move already. We starred at each other and started laughing.
It was just like the universe didn't want the man to leave that school at that moment.
Ifee kept repeating that the car was in perfect condition and have never encountered that kind of fault. Other parents and also the security men came over to ask what the problem was. Ifee was already on call with her mechanic while i was blaming the security men and the man for putting us under pressure which also affected the car too.
The man behind us was now calm and must have exceeded his frustrating limit for the day. He stopped honking at us and accepted his fate. The security men decided to help us pull the car by the side so that the other parents can drive out.
The miracle happened.
One of the security men came to us and looked at the hand gear saying...
This is where the fault is coming from.
Ifee looked at the hand gear and noticed that it was up.
Ohhh jeez, when did i do that?.
Then she remembered that when she wanted to alight from the car, there wasn't enough space on her side so she moved over to the other side of the car and alighted from that end. That must have been when she mistakenly touched the hand gear.
As we were driving out we overhead one of the security men say...
All these women that doesn't know how to drive, all they do is to carry their husband's big Cars around.
We burst out in laughter again because of their ignorance and our own ignorance too.
We should have checked the hand gear.
But that car was actually bought by Ifee with her own hard earned money.
