Yesterday was a rather nice day, so I decided to use it for my first work day up at the local community garden. I have 2 plots rented up there this year and I figured that it was time to get started up there. The plots are decent size, 14 feet by 20 feet, so you can grow a fair amount of veggies in a plot. I'm planning on growing potatoes up there this year, so I wanted to have enough space for a big harvest. I really doubt that it's less expensive to grow your own potatoes as compared to buying them, but you can grow varieties that are expensive to buy such as fingerlings or red or blue potatoes, and even the more normal potatoes taste better than the bulk commercial ones that you get from the grocery store.
The first thing I had to do at the community garden was to cut the grass around my plots. Each person with a garden plot is responsible for keeping the grass cut around their plot. This was the first time that I've cut the grass this year. It was a bit overgrown, but not too bad.
Here's a better look at my plots before I started working on them.
I had covered the second plot with black plastic last year and let it sit all year because it was overgrown with grass from not being used for the previous 2 years.
I didn't take a lot of pictures while I was up there, I got into the work and sort of forgot about the camera. At the point of this picture, the grass was cut and the plastic was half rolled back on the second plot. I had to move all the pallets and other stuff that I had holding down the plastic, so the process took a while, plus I was moving slow after having pushed the mower around.
I was up at the community garden all afternoon working, with several breaks to sit down for a few minutes, but I managed to get a lot done for my first work day there. This was at the end of the day before I packed up my stuff and headed home.
Of course, this is just the start of the adventure up at the community garden. I'm trying to decide if I want to bring the rototiller up there and till it up, or just dig where I want to plant the rows of potatoes. There's a lot of rocks in the dirt up there, so it tends to be hard on the tines of the tiller as well as the usual wear and tear on the old Troy Bilt machine. I've been thinking about tilling up the two plots next to mine just to knock down the weed growth this year, so I might end up just doing that, or maybe I'll just keep cutting the grass on those two plots to keep the weeds from going to seed. Those two plots didn't get used last year, so they're grown back in with grass and weeds. Perhaps someone will use them this year and I won't have to keep cutting them.
Well, that's all I have for this post, I hope you found it interesting!
