As my blog readers know, I've been working on getting my music room more user friendly this last week. I think I have it pretty well set up now, although I'm not quite done yet. At the end of my last post, I showed a picture of where I was at with putting the room back together.
I brought my 2 little home made 10 watt tube amps upstairs to mess around with after that picture was taken. I ended up putting them on top of the speakers and moving some more stuff around. First I did it this way.
I wasn't satisfied with that arrangement, so I moved a few things around to get a better arrangement. The little "Red and Black" amp is on the left side speaker and the older amp with the unfinished cabinet is on the right side speaker, on top of the Peavey power amp.
I still had the windows to deal with. I have bubble wrap in the windows for a bit of insulation, and I wanted to cover the windows with something. The old curtains are orange to match the rug, and that idea wasn't thrilling me very much. My house mate came up with a solution for me for the windows that will do quite well for now. Apparently it was supposed to be a bed cover, but it looks pretty good as a window cover also.
Here I am, set up do do some guitar recording using the 10 watt tube amp through the speaker cabinet, using a Shure SM-57 instrument mic to pick up the live speaker sound instead of going direct into the audio interface. I'm using my old Rat pedal to get distortion without serious volume.
I think there are times when you get a better sound from the guitar setup by using a mic rather than going direct into the audio interface. I think the speaker adds a certain flavor that's not available with a direct connection. Also, this little amp does not have a preamp out, so I can't go direct from the amp anyway.
One of these days, I'm going to build a small tube amp that includes a preamp output so that I can get a true tube sound into the audio interface. Of course, that would just be the sound of the preamplifier tubes, but that's where much of the sound comes from, unless you're looking for the power tube distortion. In that case, you're pretty much stuck with having to use a mic.
