El Paso Entre las Montañas

Después de recibir la comunicación de los habitantes de la ciudad, donde habían dejado la estación, los humanos de Andrómeda habían descendido, en varias naves que en esta ocasión fueron recibidas por un grupo de los habitantes. Los, para el estándar humano, pequeños seres, se aproximaron tímidamente a los gigantescos visitantes.

Tras varios minutos de explicaciones, los humanos dejaron en claro, que el único motivo que los traía ahí, era la curiosidad, el deseo de conocer y que no había ninguna intensión más allá de eso. Tras esto, los temerosos seres empezaron a hablar más abiertamente y satisfacer la curiosidad de los humanos.

Los Moradores de Eur, así se hacían llamar las criaturas con apariencia de insectos, que habitaban a la largo de todas las tierras al sur de la cordillera nevada del continente. Eran una especie notablemente pacífica, sus ciudades tenían las características de pequeños estados, no había un gobierno central y mantenían continuo intercambio comercial y un libre flujo de población entre ellas.

Al parecer, la relativamente pequeña población de cada ciudad y la abundancia de recursos, así como la carencia de especies que compitieran por el uso de éstos, formó una sociedad sin necesidad de competir y prácticamente libre de agresividad.

Durante su expansión como civilización, varios centenares de años atrás, aun antes de la existencia de vehículos motorizados y herramientas eléctricas, se encontraron con la berrera natural que formaban las montañas nevadas del norte del continente, su especie, poco resistente al frio, era incapaz de enfrentar los escarpados picos y las gélidas temperaturas, por lo que, por cientos de años, les fue imposible sortear la barrera.

Sin embargo, la insistencia de sus exploradores y la, por mucho tiempo repetida, leyenda de la existencia de un paso por el cual cruzar las montañas, los llevo a conseguir, después muchos intentos y cientos de relatos de desapariciones, una ruta entre las montañas, una parte con temperaturas y altura moderadas por los que, los ya para el momento existentes, vehículos mecánicos podían llevarlos a cruzar la cordillera.

Sin embargo, una tras otra, las expediciones que emprendían la travesía, no regresaban. Por mucho se habló de extrañas criaturas que habitaban tras las montañas, de algunos pocos viajeros que lograron volver, pero enloquecidos. Hasta que finalmente, tras la creación de los primeros artefactos voladores, lograron descubrir la existencia de una especie de criaturas bípedas monstruosas, que vivían en construcciones en la superficie y que, a diferencia de los Moradores de la Tierra, tenían hábitos diurnos y aun cuando el clima en las regiones tras las montañas que habitaban, era templado, parecían estar adaptados para tolerar temperaturas más frías.

Los Moradores de Eur, organizaron una expedición a gran escala, varias decenas de especialistas, ingenieros, científicos, arqueólogos y lingüistas formaron el equipo, en una de las más modernas máquinas de voladoras de transporte, que se había creado. Financiados por los parlamentos de diez de las ciudades más cercanas a las montañas, emprendieron camino, en busca de conocer y de ser posible, hacer amistad con las criaturas del norte de la cordillera.

Al cabo de veinte días, el vehículo, que sólo podía volar a una baja altitud, regresó volando por el paso entre las montañas, con sólo uno de los miembros de la expedición abordo. El desnutrido y alterado excursionista, contó historias de extrañas visiones y alucinaciones, de como aquellas criaturas parecían meterse en sus mentes y hacerlos cometer horribles acciones, desde matarse unos a otros, hasta automutilarse, parecían estar divirtiéndose con ellos, como niños que destruían sus juguetes, o, en este caso, los hacían destruirse entre sí.

Finalmente, cuando parecian estar aburridos, los hacían sumergirse en el lago, próximo a donde dejaron la nave, para que se ahogaran y sirvieran de alimento a las criaturas que habitaban bajo las aguas y que a su vez eran el alimento de aquellos seres.

Por fortuna, para el expedicionario sobreviviente, pertenecía a una sub especie de los suyos, que podía sobrevivir bajo el agua y al ordenarle introducirse en el lago, tras varios minutos de estar ahí, la influencia de aquellas criaturas desapareció, su mente de aclaró y recobró el control sobre si mismo, se mantuvo oculto en el agua hasta que oscureció y entonces subió a la nave y escapó, para regresar y contar lo sucedido.

Tras eso, los Moradores de Eur, decidieron bloquear el acceso al paso entre las montañas, para evitar que aquellas criaturas cruzaran al sur y prohibieron cualquier otra expedición o sobre vuelo al territorio tras los picos.

Ahora los humanos, tras conocer el relato de aquel sobreviviente de la expedición, debían decidir que hacer, respecto a la desaparición de sus compañeros que, al igual que los Moradores de Eur, lo hicieron alguna vez, se habían internado en territorio de los que fueron llamados los Mun, lo que en la lengua de los habitantes de Eur, era el equivalente a los demonios.

The Pass Between the Mountains

After receiving communication from the inhabitants of the city, where they had left the station, Andromeda's humans had descended in several ships that on this occasion were received by a group of the inhabitants. Those, by human standard, small beings, timidly approached the gigantic visitors.

After several minutes of explanations, the humans made it clear that the only reason that brought them there was curiosity, the desire to know and that there was no intention beyond that. After this, the fearful beings began to speak more openly and satisfy the curiosity of humans.

The Inhabitants of Eur, thus were called the creatures with appearance of insects, that inhabited along all the lands to the south of the snowy mountain range of the continent. They were a remarkably peaceful species, their cities had the characteristics of small states, there was no central government and they maintained continuous commercial exchange and a free flow of population between them.

Apparently, the relatively small population of each city and the abundance of resources, as well as the lack of species competing for their use, formed a society without the need to compete and practically free of aggressiveness.

During its expansion as a civilization, several hundred years ago, even before the existence of motorized vehicles and electric tools, they encountered the natural barrier formed by the snowy mountains of the north of the continent, its species, little resistant to cold, was unable to face the steep peaks and icy temperatures, so that for hundreds of years, it was impossible to avoid the barrier.

However, the insistence of their explorers and the legend, for a long time repeated, of the existence of a pass through which to cross the mountains, led them to get, after many attempts and hundreds of accounts of disappearances, a route between the mountains, a part with moderate temperatures and height by which, for the moment already existing, mechanical vehicles could take them to cross the mountain range.

However, one after the other, the expeditions that undertook the crossing, did not return. There was much talk of strange creatures that inhabited the mountains, of a few travelers that managed to return, but crazy. Until finally, after the creation of the first flying artifacts, they managed to discover the existence of a kind of monstrous biped creatures that lived in constructions on the surface and that, unlike the dwellers of the Earth, had diurnal habits and even when the climate in the regions behind the mountains they inhabited was temperate, they seemed to be adapted to tolerate colder temperatures.

The Eur Inhabitants organized a large-scale expedition, several dozen specialists, engineers, scientists, archaeologists and linguists formed the team, in one of the most modern transport flying machines, which had been created. Funded by the parliaments of ten of the cities closest to the mountains, they set out in search of knowledge and, if possible, friendship with the creatures of the north of the mountain range.

After twenty days, the vehicle, which could only fly at a low altitude, flew back through the mountain pass with only one member of the expedition aboard. The malnourished and altered hiker told stories of strange visions and hallucinations, of how those creatures seemed to get into their minds and make them commit horrible actions, from killing each other, to self-mutilating, they seemed to be having fun with them, like children destroying their toys, or, in this case, making them destroy each other.

Finally, when they seemed to be bored, they made them submerge themselves in the lake, next to where they left the ship, so that they could drown and serve as food for the creatures that lived under the waters and that in turn were the food of those beings.

Fortunately, for the surviving expeditionary, he belonged to a sub species of his own, which could survive under water and by ordering him to enter the lake, after several minutes of being there, the influence of those creatures disappeared, his mind cleared and regained control over himself, remained hidden in the water until it got dark and then went up to the ship and escaped, to return and tell what happened.

After that, the Inhabitants of Eur, decided to block the access to the pass between the mountains, to avoid that those creatures crossed to the south and prohibited any other expedition or overflight to the territory after the peaks.

Now the humans, after knowing the story of that survivor of the expedition, had to decide what to do, regarding the disappearance of their companions who, like the Inhabitants of Eur, once did, had been interned in the territory of those who were called the Mun, which in the language of the inhabitants of Eur, was the equivalent of demons.
