―Tengo casi ochenta años viniendo a este santuario y ni siquiera tenía idea de que este lugar existía ―dijo Rafael, acelerando el ritmo con el que pedaleaba.
―Lo descubrí hace unos meses, el robot guía de la oficina de parque me lo recomendó para usar la canoa de pedales, es un sitio poco concurrido, normalmente sólo los guardaparques vienen a hacer rondas, pero casi nunca hay turistas ―explicó Henry acelerando también su ritmo para poder dar alcance a su compañero.
En la medida que se aproximaban a los riscos, el río se iba haciendo más estrecho y la corriente incrementaba su velocidad. Rafael volteo su mirada a los riscos y pudo ver como algo se movió en lo alto de las rocas.
―Hay algo allá arriba ―dijo, señalando a lo alto de la abrupta pared de rocas.
―Deben ser algún ciervo o cabra, tengo entendido que, en los últimos diez años, los han venido introduciendo paulatinamente en este parque ―explicó Henry, viendo en la dirección en la que señalaba Rafael.
―Puede ser, sólo espero que no haya introducido algún depredador con dientes y garras que nos esté siguiendo, para tomar un buen bocado de excursionista.
Continuaron pedaleando durante unos quince minutos más, mientras más se adentraban en el bosque, más rápidas y agitadas se volvían las aguas. Rafael se aproximo a la orilla y le hiso señas a Henry para que lo acompañara.
―Creo que ya fue suficiente para mí, estoy fuera de forma ―dijo mientras se ponía de pie para bajar de la balsa ―. Además, está empezando a oscurecer, creo que lo mejor será buscar donde pasar la noche.
Desmontaron las balsas e instalaron el refugio, unos pocos minutos después se dispusieron a comer, para luego poder dedicar su tiempo a lo que habían realmente venido.
La inclusión de especies nativas de la Tierra en mundos con condiciones muy diferentes a las que existían en aquel planeta, ha dado origen a variaciones evolutivas, que en ocasiones se ha dado en periodos de tiempo muy cortos, de cientos a pocos miles de años, llevando a los nuevos individuos a ser casi irreconocibles, en comparación con los que les dieron origen.
En Euterpe un planeta santuario, vecino de Palas, la deriva evolutiva, ha dado origen a una variedad de criaturas, realmente interesantes; algunas de ellas consideradas un verdadero manjar, en el creciente mercado de restaurantes elegantes que las sirven, para la exigente clientela que, en las principales ciudades de su planeta vecino, está dispuesta a pagar una considerable cifra por degustarlas.
Así que el comercio con estas criaturas se ha vuelto un negocio particularmente rentable, para quienes estén dispuestos a enfrentar los riesgos que obtenerlas acarrea. Si bien Euterpe está poblado de animales relativamente inofensivos, existen unas escasas criaturas peligrosas en sus bosques, una de ellas es el simio arborícola gigante y otra el lince de Euterpe, el primero es una criatura muy territorial y agresiva que vive en los pinos gigantes de los bosques del norte del planeta y el segundo un felino que es conocido por sus poco afortunados encuentros con campistas de las regiones montañosas del continente occidental.
Rafael y Henry, se encontraban en la región meridional del continente occidental, afortunadamente para ellos, además de los mosquitos infectados con algún tipo de síndrome febril, sin mayor riesgo para los sistemas inmunológicos potenciados por nanomáquinas y los ocasionales ataques de ciervos enfurecidos, no existía ningún otro peligro potencial para quienes se aventuraban a estos territorios, en buena parte explorados sólo por los robots del departamento de parques.
Después de comer una abundante ración de vegetales y carne de alce en conserva, se internaron, en medio de la noche con la intención de atrapar ardillas voladoras de Euterpe, un animal cuya dulca carne es muy apreciada en los círculos de alta gastronomía de Palas.
Este tipo de ardillas son de hábitos nocturnos, miden ochenta centímetros de largo y pesan unos seis kilos. Rafael extendió entre varios árboles la red de captura, mientras Henry emitía una radio frecuencia que desorientaba un órgano sensorial que usaban estas criaturas para orientarse en la oscuridad, por efecto del emisor, las ardillas caían de los árboles y eran atrapadas por la red, de donde sólo los machos jóvenes eran seleccionados para ser llevados a Palas.
Lo que Rafael y Henry no sabían era que entre los arbustos eran observados por una criatura, esta entonces desconocida, los había estado siguiendo, desde que los observo de los riscos, al borde del rio, mientras pedaleaban en las balsas, y desde la rivera opuesta los vio desembarcar y armar el campamento, luego, mientras comían, cruzó el rio en medio de la oscuridad y los siguió hasta donde se encontraban cazando ardillas, ahora estaba tras los arbustos, acechándolos, esperando pacientemente el momento oportuno.
Se encontraban distraídos, Henry seleccionando a las ardillas que se llevarían y Rafael, usando un bastón eléctrico para matarlas rápida e indoloramente, cuando tras ellos de entre los arbustos un gigantesco lagarto de unos tres metros de largo se levanto sobre sus patas traseras, para luego lanzarse sobre Rafael asiéndolo de una pierna con su descomunal mandíbula, en medio del dolor que le provocó el ataque y la sorpresa del mismo, se aferró al basto eléctrico y lo introdujo entre las fauces parcialmente abiertas que lo sujetaban por la pierna y le dio una descarga en su máxima intensidad a la criatura.
El lagarto retrocedió aturdido, y les dio el tiempo suficiente para correr al refugio que habían instalado a pocos metros del rio, donde poco después fueron rescatados por los robots del departamento de parques.
Meses después, gracias al relato de ambos cazadores, seria oficialmente descubierta y catalogada un nuevo tipo de lagarto gigante originario de Euterpe, descendiente de las iguanas que habían sido introducidas al planeta, hace más de dos mil quinientos años. Estas criaturas de hábitos nocturnos, se habían convertido en depredadoras de las ardillas voladoras y de otros animales que vivían en los árboles de los bosques del sur del continente occidental del planeta.
-I'm almost eighty years old coming to this shrine and had no idea this place existed, -said Rafael, speeding up the pace at which he was pedaling.
-I discovered it a few months ago, the robot guide of the park office recommended it to me to use the canoe of pedals, it is a little crowded place, normally only the park rangers come to make rounds, but almost never there are tourists - explained Henry accelerating also his rhythm to be able to reach his companion.
As they approached the cliffs, the river became narrower and the current increased its speed. Rafael turned his gaze to the cliffs and could see how something moved on top of the rocks.
-There's something up there, -he said, pointing to the top of the abrupt rock wall.
-It must be some deer or goat, I understand that, over the last ten years, they have been gradually introduced into this park, -said Henry, looking in the direction Rafael was pointing.
-Maybe, I just hope he hasn't introduced some predator with teeth and claws that is following us, to take a good hiker's bite.
They continued pedaling for about fifteen more minutes, the further they went into the forest, the faster and more agitated the waters became. Rafael approached the shore and beckoned Henry to accompany him.
-I think it's enough for me, I'm out of shape, -he said as he stood to get off the raft -. Besides, it's starting to get dark, I think it's best to look for a place to spend the night.
They dismantled the rafts and set up the shelter, a few minutes later they were ready to eat, and then they could devote their time to what they had really come for.
The inclusion of native species of the Earth in worlds with very different conditions to those that existed on that planet, has given rise to evolutionary variations, which has sometimes occurred in very short periods of time, from hundreds to a few thousand years, leading to new individuals to be almost unrecognizable, compared to those who gave them origin.
In Euterpe, a sanctuary planet, neighbor of Palas, the evolutionary drift, has given origin to a variety of creatures, really interesting; some of them considered a true delicacy, in the growing market of elegant restaurants that serve them, for the demanding clientele that, in the main cities of its neighboring planet, is willing to pay a considerable amount to taste them.
So trading with these creatures has become a particularly profitable business, for those willing to face the risks of obtaining them. Although Euterpe is populated by relatively harmless animals, there are few dangerous creatures in its forests, one of which is the giant tree ape and the other the Euterpe lynx, the former being a very territorial and aggressive creature living in the giant pines of the northern forests of the planet and the latter a feline who is known for his unfortunate encounters with campers from the mountainous regions of the western continent.
Rafael and Henry, were in the southern region of the western continent, fortunately for them, besides the mosquitoes infected with some type of febrile syndrome, without major risk for the immunological systems boosted by nanomachines and the occasional attacks of enraged deer, there was no other potential danger for those who ventured to these territories, largely explored only by the robots of the parks department.
After eating an abundant ration of vegetables and canned elk meat, they went into the middle of the night with the intention of catching flying squirrels from Euterpe, an animal whose sweet meat is highly appreciated in the haute cuisine circles of Palas.
This type of squirrel is nocturnal, measures eighty centimetres long and weighs about six kilos. Rafael extended the capture net among several trees, while Henry emitted a radio frequency that disorientated a sensory organ that these creatures used to orient themselves in the darkness, by effect of the emitter, the squirrels fell from the trees and were caught by the net, from where only the young males were selected to be taken to Palas.
What Raphael and Henry did not know was that among the bushes they were observed by a creature, this then unknown, had been following them, since I observe them from the cliffs, at the edge of the river, while they pedaled in the rafts, and from the opposite riviera he saw them disembark and set up the camp, then, while they ate, he crossed the river in the middle of the darkness and followed them until where they were hunting squirrels, now he was behind the bushes, stalking them, waiting patiently for the opportune moment.
They were distracted, Henry selecting the squirrels to be taken and Raphael, using an electric stick to kill them quickly and painlessly, when behind them from among the bushes a giant lizard about three meters long rose on their hind legs, and then he threw himself at Rafael, holding him by one leg with his huge jaw, in the middle of the pain caused by the attack and his surprise, he clung to the electric baton and introduced it between the partially open jaws that held him by the leg and gave the creature a shock in its maximum intensity.
The lizard recoiled stunned, giving them enough time to run to the shelter they had installed a few meters from the river, where they were rescued shortly afterwards by the robots of the parks department.
Months later, thanks to the story of both hunters, a new type of giant lizard originating in Euterpe, descendant of the iguanas that had been introduced to the planet more than two thousand five hundred years ago, would be officially discovered and catalogued. These nocturnal creatures had become predators of the flying squirrels and other animals that lived in the trees of the forests of the south of the western continent of the planet.
