DALVIN

DALVIN

Ingmar advanced a few steps and could feel something moving inside the box he was carrying. He stopped abruptly and waited to see if what he had felt was just his imagination, then something shook, rattling the box in his hands.

Startled, he leaned over and set the container down gently on the cold lab floor. -What did you say it was that we transported, Lucas? -He asked over his helmet communicator.

-I was told it was lab equipment and old samples," replied Lucas, who had stayed behind, loading the sliding platform with several crates marked "Fragile," and which were supposed to be filled with crystal equipment.

-I'm sure something inside the box I'm carrying moved," said Ingmar, looking at the box out of the corner of his eye.

-Don't be silly, we're at zero atmospheric pressure and those boxes aren't airtight enough to contain air, let alone with over a hundred years of being abandoned here. If there was anything alive in one of them, it must have died a long time ago," said Lucas, reprimanding his companion.

Ingmar bent down again and as soon as he started to lift the box again, it shook again and he dropped it, jumping back.

-Damn, seriously, that thing is moving," Ingmar insisted, his voice trembling.

-With a demon Ingmar, you're going to make me stop what I'm doing, to go see your stupid things," said Lucas angrily.

-Damn it, it's not my bullshit, that thing is moving inside the box," he insisted.

-I have already told you countless times that low gravity causes strange sensations of movement, it is likely that what is inside is not held by anything and when you move it, you feel it shaking" said Lucas, as he advanced and arrived to where his partner was observing the box, leaving several steps in between. -Well, here I am, is that the stupid box that moves? -he said, approaching Ingmar and pointing to the box.

-See for yourself," said Ingmar, stepping aside so that Lucas could approach the box.

Lucas bent down, grabbed the box by both side handles and lifted it without much effort, then whatever was inside the box shook violently, making the box vibrate in a clearly visible way.

-Damn it! -Lucas shouted and dropped the box on the floor. At the same time he stepped back abruptly, until he was at Ingmar's side.

-You see, I told you it was moving," said Ingmar euphorically.

-Shut up Ingmar, let me think, what can this thing be? -Lucas said, when suddenly, the communication system of both men's helmets began to clear and whistle.

-Hello, can you hear me? -said a strange, synthetic voice over the comm system.

-Who the hell is there, who's speaking? -said Lucas.

-I'm DALVIN, the assistant worker at the Army's Atlas Component Advanced Genetics Laboratory, please could you release me.

-Where are you, this facility is the property of Parliament," said Lucas, looking in all directions.

-I'm not sure of my location, but I must be inside a box, which someone has recently been moving," said the synthetic voice.

Both men saw each other's faces and then looked at the box they had been carrying. They approached it slowly and Luke bent down, reached out and pulled the handle that was used to open the lid of the box, then stood up and, stepping back a little, used the toe of his boot to lift the lid and let it fall back.

An object of metallic blue color and slightly cubic shape, but with rounded edges, flew up from the box and turned in all directions as if scanning the place, then focused on them with what seemed to be a lens, which came out of one of its faces, and again spoke to them through the communication system.

-Thank you, I don't know why I was in that box," said the voice, in a cheerful tone. -As I told you, my name is DALVIN, I am the robotic assistant of the laboratory and my task is to register all the experiments that are performed here, among other tasks. Who are you?

Lucas and Ingmar remained dumbfounded for some minutes, observing that small flying robot, which floated in front of them watching them with its grayish lens through which a shutter could be seen constantly changing its size, revealing, at the end, a copper sensor.

-I am Lucas Izarra and this is my associate Ingmar Gallant, we are workers of a company of appropriations and transports," said Lucas, introducing himself to the small device.

-What have you come to the Advanced Genetics Laboratory of the Atlas Component," asked the device, approaching the faces of the men, who leaned slightly behind him, backing away from him.

-We are working here by mandate of the Parliament, we are, emptying this facility, loading everything that is packed on our ship," Ingmar replied, stuttering.

-Emptying the facility," said the apparatus, apparently intrigued. -I don't understand why they are emptying it, where are the personnel working here, where is Doctor Ortega, the laboratory director?

-You are not understanding us, these facilities are empty, the people who worked here left many years ago, we have been sent to collect the surplus equipment," Lucas explained.

-The facilities have been vacated, they are abandoned, there must have been an emergency, so what was the reason for them to stop working here? -asked the little machine.

-We don't know, we only know that there is no one here and that we must take whatever has been packed for transport," said Lucas.

-In that case it must have been an emergency evacuation, I must comply with order EV334, I must leave, I suggest that you do the same, your ship is in cargo bay 34, upon arrival it will be ready to leave," finished speaking the little machine and set off in the direction of the center of the space station.

-What the hell just happened? -said Ingmar.

-I don't know, but for some reason I don't like it - let's get on the platform and finish loading what's missing and get out of here.

As soon as the men arrived at the hold where they were loading the containers on the sliding platform, the emergency lights of the station turned on, astonished, they looked up and watched as multiple illuminated signs indicated the direction of the different evacuation routes.

-What the hell is going on here," said Lucas. When suddenly the robot's voice was heard again on the communications system.

You are still here, you must leave immediately, this facility is of maximum security and all the experiments that are performed here are of absolute secrecy, they cannot fall into ill-intentioned hands, and before the evacuation of the same I must initiate the self-destruction protocol of the station, included in the order EV334. For your sake you must leave as soon as possible, the antimatter core of the facility will begin to collapse in less than 3 minutes and 22 seconds.

Hearing these words the men forgot what they were doing and began to run through the corridors in the direction of where their ship was, while they were doing it, Ingmar asked panting.

-Lucas, do you remember the instruction we were given when we were sent to do this job?

-What the hell are you asking me, which one? -Lucas said with difficulty.

-That we were not to open any of the boxes, under any circumstances," said Ingmar.

-Yes, of course I remember it, and what's that? -Lucas answered.

-I think we should have taken it into account.
