Letra

Viene la muerte echando rasero
Se lleva al joven, también al viejo
La muerte viene echando parejo
No se le escapa ni un pasajero

No se escapa ni el rezandero
Y ni el borracho por vinatero
Ni el asesino por ser matón
Todos tendremos que ir al panteón

Viene la muerte echando rasero
Se lleva al joven, también al viejo
La muerte viene echando parejo
No se le escapa ni un pasajero

Mueren obispos, mueren profetas
Mueren vicarios y confesores
Ya no los curan ni los doctores
Ya no les valen las ampolletas
Mueren cantantes, mueren poetas

Hive Open Mic WEEK 152 // Viene La Muerte Echando Rasero // aly.squid@aly.squid (English/Spanish)

Friendly greetings dear Hivers, it is a pleasure for me to be once again sharing with you on Open mic. This week's theme is "Traditional Music" this proposal made me think a lot about what song to bring to share and I came up with a very nice one. It is "VIENE LA MUERTE ECHANDO RASERO" a peasant poetry from San Luis de Potosi, which was composed by Ascensión Aguilar Galván.

I knew it thanks to the magnificent song of one of my favorite singers Lila Downs, in her album Balas y Chocolate, published in 2015. This album was a gift from my dear jetta.amaya@jetta.amaya in 2016 as a nice detail for completing my diploma in Popular Culture and Communication, so it is something I remember with great affection.

The song is wonderful, its lyrics are funny and scary, it connects us with our vulnerability and the fragility of our material existence. I decided to bring it as a proposal because it is sung by lila in a traditional Mexican genre, besides its lyrics are popular poetry and have elements that are part of the cultural imaginary of Mexico, such as death.

The first time Jeta and I sang this song together, I played the guitar dressed as Catrina. We have always admired this ritual tradition and our dream is to be able to go to Mexico one day and enjoy this cultural richness in the flesh. On another occasion I also painted a Catrina mug, here are the pictures.

lyrics

Death is coming, throwing out the rasero
It takes the young, also the old
Death comes pouring evenly
Not even a passenger escapes

Not even the prayerful one escapes
And not even the drunkard for being a vintner
Nor the murderer for being a thug
We'll all have to go to the cemetery

Death comes pouring out his yardstick
It takes the young and the old
Death comes pouring evenly
Not even a passenger escapes

Bishops die, prophets die
Vicars and confessors die
Even doctors can no longer cure them
They are no longer worth the light bulbs
Singers are dying, poets are dying

The rich and the laborer are dying
The saddler also takes the saddler
And the carpenter with more advantage
Because even he makes his own box

Death comes pouring in
It takes the young and the old
Death comes pouring evenly
Not a passenger escapes him

Death comes pouring down the line
It takes the young, it takes the old
Death comes pouring down evenly
Not a passenger escapes

Death has been so cared for
That he carries on his back the laborer
The married man dies, the single man dies
Christians of great enterprise die
Before he comes we must pour beer

We're marching to the grave
We are marching without delay
Well riveted in a box
Four people are carrying us

Death comes pouring down the line
It takes the young, also the old
Death comes pouring evenly
Not a passenger escapes

Death comes pouring down the line
It takes the young, it takes the old
Death comes pouring down evenly
Not a passenger escapes him

Death comes pouring down the line
It takes the young, it takes the old
Death comes pouring down evenly
Not a passenger escapes

Death is coming.
