We’re happy to announce we’ve open-sourced our atomic swap wallet. To get your hands on all the code and documentation, please visit our GitHub repository.
We spent months building our atomic swap wallet to enable a trustless, low-cost exchange of digital assets. While we’ve since chosen Plasma as the framework for our DEX, we still believe atomic swaps have enormous potential for a wide range of applications.
If you’re new to atomic swaps, don’t worry. Our documentation will guide you through every line of code so you can learn how we built the world’s first atomic swap wallet. You can also head over to our testnet atomic swap wallet to try the wallet out for yourself.
If you’re building a dApp, smart contract, exchange, or any other project that requires a trustless exchange of value, atomic swaps could serve you well. You could then save potentially months of work by using or modifying our code.
We began with the solid foundations built by the Decred team, completing the world’s first on-chain Bitcoin to Ethereum swap. Now it’s your turn to see how far you can take this exciting technology.
We’re always open to questions from the community, so please get in touch. In the meantime, here’s a quick reminder of what atomic swaps are and why they’re important.
What are atomic swaps?
An atomic swap is a secure way of exchanging digital assets. They’re special for three reasons: they’re anonymous, secure, and cost very little — especially if done off-chain.
Atomic swaps are “atomic” because they either work or they don’t. There are no fiddly in-between states: either a successful swap where both parties in the transaction receive their new funds, or an unsuccessful one where their original funds are returned.
Every atomic swap is secured by a Hashed Time-Locked Contract (HTLC), which requires both parties to cryptographically confirm receipt of their new tokens before they’re released. That way neither party can defraud the other.
Why are they important?
Through the use of HTLCs, atomic swaps are secure — traders and other users gain peace of mind knowing their funds are safe.
Theoretically, atomic swaps can also be done across different blockchains, providing flexible trading opportunities without intermediaries getting in the way or taking ownership of traded assets. That makes them perfect for Over-The-Counter (OTC) trades where fast-as-possible settlement isn’t necessarily a priority but security and confidentiality is.
Head over to our GitHub repo and see the power of atomic swaps for yourself. We’d love to know what think, so drop us an email with any comments, questions, or feedback.
Until next time.
