What is scary is that none of these five are mutually exclusive. Indeed, once one arrives it increases the likelihood of others following.

But humans have many vices, and one of the best is that they are curmudgeonly, rebellious types. It sometimes needs a timescale of centuries for a total change, but in every controlling, dystopian system there are daily minor acts of rebellion and rebellious thought, subtle acts of subversion which weaken the system over time. It's that which gives me hope.
