Epictetus is considered one of the great philosphers of the stoic school. He lived and taught in the 1st and 2nd centures AD. Epictetus was a Roman slave who obtained an education and revealed an extraordinary mind. Some stoic sayings can be challenging to absorb, and examine the locus of control and aligning ones expectations with natural law. This translation was performed by Elizabeth Carter an extraordinary scholar and thinker of 18th century England, and a great mind in her own right. Enchiridion is most often translated as handbook or manual.
