In the event of a minor ailment, we often turn to over-the-counter prescription drugs to sort out our condition, but this needn't always be the case. Here are some quick, homemade remedies.

GINGER

Ginger is a flowering plant that originated from China. Ginger has a long history for relieving digestive problems such as nausea, loss of appetite, motion sickness and pain and in cancer patients undergoing chemotheraphy. Incorporate it into everyday meals like fish stews and curries or enjoy it in a hot cup of tea. Generally safe, it may exacerbate symptoms of acid re-flux in some people. It is high in gingerol, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Ginger appears to be effective at reducing the day-to-day progression of muscle pain, and may reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness.

Osteoarthritis is a common health problem which is known to involve degeneration of the joints in the body, leading to symptoms like joint pain and stiffness. Ginger powder may also reduce menstrual pain also known as dysmenorrhea- a monthly problem of many women that accompanies the normal menstrual flow.

HONEY

Many people swarm to honey for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey is known to contain flavonoids, antioxidants which help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease. Honey treatment may also reduce gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis. All honey has an antibacterial ability because the bees add an enzyme that forms hydrogen peroxide. Ancient Olympic athletes would eat honey and dried figs to enhance their performance. This has now been verified with modern studies, showing that it is superior in maintaining glycogen levels and improving recovery time than other sweeteners.
Considered one of the nature's best all-round remedies, it is excellent that the FDA in the Us approved Manuka Honey to be used to treat chronic ulcers. But beware the myth that honey is okay for patients with diabetes...

A sugar is a sugar!

GARLIC

Garlic is widely used for several conditions linked to the blood system and heart, including atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, coronary heart disease and hypertension. Garlic is also used by some people for the prevention of different cancers. Extensive studies have proved these benefits.

AND HERE'S ONE THAT GOT MY ATTENTION!

The invigorating properties of garlic protect the skin from the effect of free radicals and slow down the depletion of collagen which leads to loss of elasticity in aging skin. Applied topically, garlic does wonders to skin infected with fungal infections and provides relief from skin ailments like eczema. It is also an effective remedy for fungal infections like athlete's foot and ringworms.

All of us know about the wonders of onion for hair but its brother, garlic is no less of a hero for your thinning mane. Well, its surprise time. Rubbing crushed garlic extract on your scalp or massaging with garlic-infused oil is known to prevent and even reverse hair loss.

Remember not to overcook it in your food - otherwise it loses its therapeutic value!

LEMON

Drink one glass of warm lemon juice in the morning. Popular for its therapeutic properties, its cleansing and healing effects are evident in the long run. Be sure to drink it diluted though, as the concentrated lemon juice can ruin your teeth enamel. Lemon enhances hydration.

Water is the best beverage for hydration, but some people don’t like the taste of it on its own. Adding lemon enhances water’s flavor, which may help you drink more.

Citrus fruits like lemons are high in vitamin C, which is a primary antioxidant that helps protect cells from damaging free radicals.

Vitamin C may reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, and lower blood pressure. Research published in Stroke showed that people with low vitamin C levels, especially obese men with high blood pressure, have a higher risk of stroke. Vitamin C may also help prevent or limit the duration of the common cold in some people, although studies are conflicting. Vitamin C found in lemons helps to reduce skin wrinkling. The citric acid in lemons may also help prevent calcium kidney stones.
