They were, but limited it to the nation. Nazi means national socialism and the ideology at core was the society to subordinate their personal interests to the "common good", accepting political interests as the main priority of economic organization. This is on a basic level the same credo from the communism, only it is based on nation not on a global scale.

Also in terms of killing they have been the same, with a plus to communism that managed to kill much more given the long reigns it had.

Communism in China killed for example 45 million people in 4 years, compared to Nazism who killed 6 million in the same amount of time.

Both are to be condemned as both destroyed humanity. Here Communism earns some plus points as it killed hundreds of millions and left countries struggle many years after it disappeared.
