It's very simple and elegant.
You take some timespan, like 3-6 months, and historical data for relevant currencies, BTC, ETH, LTC... About 20-30 (50 of them)

Te method is going to reveal which coins are showing the same pattern.
If we do the same for Steem, we can see that it was very similar to ETH.
Last summer, it was noticeable that it took completely different route.
