For most of us, meetings are a key part of our working lives. For someone with a hearing loss, however, they can potentially be very tricky. Background sounds, laughter and banter, noisy latecomers and people talking over each other can all contribute to the problems.
Here’s how you can make things easier for Deaf attendees:
- Make sure everyone is aware if someone has a hearing loss, so that they know to speak slowly and clearly, don’t cover their mouths, and repeat things if necessary.
- Look into providing microphones and other listening devices
- Be aware of any audio clips or videos that may be part of a presentation, and work out how a Deaf person will be able to follow those.
- Turn off noisy air conditioning, close windows and try and hold meetings in the quietest rooms available
- Soft furnishings such as carpets or rugs and cushions will also help make life easier
Good luck!
