I didn't encounter this much in my culture, but when people do say it, it's usually understood to be hyperbole, like "I can't see my own nose without my glasses", or meeting a relative and jokingly saying, "Who is this? Let me put on my glasses." And it's usually old people who say such things. I don't think there's much stigma around glasses these days, because of how many people wear them now, even without needing them; though I do remember a slight stigma when I was a kid, and kids who needed them avoided them for that reason; it was kinda like wearing teeth braces.
