Hi everyone :)
And here we go on a tour through Alentejo lands, this time in the city of Évora.
The visit was very quick but still, it was possible to feel the magic of this land and go through some of its historic streets and visit some fascinating places that i will share in the next posts.
Today i start with the one of the most emblematic points of the city, the Roman Temple, one of the grandest and best preserved Roman temples in the entire Iberian Peninsula, symbol of the Roman occupation in the city, considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
This temple located in the historic center of the city, at Largo Conde de Vila Flor, is also known as the Temple of Diana, having its name originated in a legend created in the 17th century that associates its construction with the cult of Diana, daughter of Jupiter, and hunting goddess.
After several years of study, the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation published the result of a scientific investigation where it concludes that its construction was based on the imperial cult.
As well as some of the temples, monasteries and monuments that i have already had the opportunity to share here, this one also has undergone a variety of practical uses over time, having served as a strong house for the castle in the city of Évora and even as a municipal slaughterhouse, Yeap, that's crazy, can you imagine? a slaughterhouse in this place?
Once there, the contrast of that architecture with the background of the surrounding area is something extraordinary, it seems a little out of touch with reality and that is what makes the scenery fascinating, especially for those who get there the way we arrived, when going up the street and starting viewing the columns made of white Estremoz marble with its conserved capitals from the top to the bottom, an almost complete podium.
Despite the rigor of time, today it is still possible to glimpse the original architrave supported by 6 practically intact columns and another 7 columns on the sides and a ruined staircase on the north top, the main place chosen to take that photo to remember later.
For today i will not stretch any longer ;)
That´s all for today :)
See you soon
Thank you for watching :)
