The biggest barrier to entry for learning robotics is dealing with crappy mechanical parts and assembling them in a robust manner. Likewise, programming an Arduino board is fun, but the basic demo of making an LED toggle on and off is somewhat of a let down.

The Create 2 lets you use platform built by iRobot using all their mechanical expertise and pairs well with open programming tools. If you wanted to spend time making a bot that chases your cat with a squirt gun, you can spend time writing the code rather than figuring out how to mount a servo.
