The following verse is revealing:

"Daniel went to ask the king to give him a deadline, and he would give the interpretation" (Daniel 2:16).

When you are asked to do something that is impossible, the biblical orientation is for you and not to panic, but to try to understand why. This was our devotional yesterday.

But, in order not to make a hasty decision you need more time.

Why? Your biggest temptation in the middle of the crisis is to be impulsive. Normally, you do not think rationally. You think emotionally. You want to make a quick decision.

But, it is more important to make the right decision than a quick decision.

A wrong decision is always wrong no matter how fast you took.

Then, take a step back, breathe deeply, calm down and talk to God.

Daniel did it when the king asked him to interpret a dream (after ordering the murder of the first people they tried).

The Bible says: "Daniel went immediately to see the king and asked for more time to tell the king the meaning of the dream" (Daniel 2:16).

I do not know if I could have done this as a teenager. Daniel immediately went to this powerful king and asked for more time.

Daniel did not want to procrastinate, but he did not make a hasty decision. He gives us a great example of how to handle a high pressure situation.

I will leave some reflection questions:

  1. Have you ever acted hastily when you were asked to do something really difficult? How was that experience?

  2. Why is it so easy to postpone when you are in a difficult situation?

  3. Who in your life needs to remember that it is important to spend more time in difficult situations?
