As I am sitting at my house happy that the winter storm seems to have missed us. I get a call from the Alaska state troopers dispatch. 3 moose have been hit by the Alaska railroad. Due to the heavy snow this year the moose have been using the railroad tracks and roads for easy travel.
Alaska railroad is a big part of my family, both my father and sister retired from them and my brother still works for them.
This is the second moose they have called me on this year so my freezers will be full. No need to buy meat this year. Just have to make a couple trips to Valdez for salmon.
This moose will be mostly burger and sausage to help feed my family of 5. We process all of our own meat. Beats the hell out of 50 cents per pound to have some one else do it. 6 hours of my time is worth the savings on my bank account.
This is the moose we got today
Might be a little beat up will have to wait till I get it home to know for sure.
Here in Alaska we have a program that all hit moose go to a charity or family. All you have to do is sign up with the state troopers, then you are put on a call list.
As I am sitting waiting for my moose pickup it starts to snow like crazy out of no where I found the storm that missed us. Thankfully it only lasted 15 minutes.
My cell phone camera only fought a few flakes. Well now the real work begins.
