The world is a big place and different people around the world need a means to explain things that can't be explained, hence the conception of religion. There are so many religions worldwide because there are so many cultures worldwide, each one have a different idea about who runs the world and how the world was created. If not for missionaries and jihads, then i wreckon there would be a religion for every state worldwide.
