어느덧 5월.
제주 깜짝 여행에서 올라오긴 했는데, 바쁜 일정에 쫓겨 여독이 아직 안풀렸어요.
문득, 제가 가장 좋아하는 글을 적어 보고 싶어집니다. 교훈, 명언, 도덕경, ... 각종 타이틀로 불리우지만 제게는 아름다운 시 한 편처럼 느껴집니다. 이 글을 읽다 보면 머리도 마음도 맑아지곤 합니다.

태양이 떠오를 때 일어나 기도하라
혼자서 기도하라. 자주 기도하라!
그대가 무엇을 말하건
神은 귀를 기울이시니라
길을 잃은 사람들에게 관대하라
길 잃은 영혼에게서 나오는 것은
무지와 자만, 분노, 질투, 탐욕.
그들이 제 길을 갈 수 있도록 기도하라
혼자 힘으로 그대 자신을 찾으라
다른 사람이 그대의 여정을 대신 정하도록 하지 말라
이 길은 그대만의 길이며, 그대 혼자 가야할 길이다
비록 다른 이와 함께 걸을 수는 있으나
누구도 그대를 위해 대신 걸을 수는 없다
내 집에 찾아 온 손님은 정성을 다해 대접하라
가장 좋은 음식을 내 놓고 가장 좋은 잠자리를 제공하고
존중과 경의로 대우하라
자신의 것이 아닌 것을 취하지 말라
개인의 것이든 공동체의 것이든
자연이나 문화 어떤 곳에서 온 것이든
자신의 땀과 노력이 스며들지 않은 것은
그대의 것이 아니니라
사람이든 한 줄기 풀이든
이 땅에 존재하는 모든 만물을 존중하라
다른 사람의 생각과 소망과 말에 경의를 표하라
누구든 각자 고유의 표현을 할 권리가 있으니
결코 간섭하거나 조롱하거나 비웃지 말라
결코 다른 사람을 비난하거나 욕하지 말라
그대가 우주를 향해 내보낸 부정적인 에너지는
그 몇 갑절로 그대에게 되돌아 오느니라
인간은 실수하게 마련이며
용서받지 못할 어떠한 실수도 존재하지 않느니라
부정적인 생각은 몸, 마음, 영혼을 병들게 한다
긍정적이고 밝게 보는 습관을 기르라
자연은 우리를 위해 있는 것이 아니라, 우리의 일부이다
지구 공동체 가족의 구성원이니라
어린이는 우리 미래의 씨앗이다
그들의 가슴에 사랑을 심어주고,
지혜와 삶의 가르침이라는 물을 뿌려 주어라
그들이 성장해 나갈 수 있는 공간을 마련해 주어라
다른 사람의 가슴에 상처를 입히지 말라
그대의 불편한 감정의 독기는 결국 자신에게로 돌아오느니라
언제 어디서나 진실하라
정직은 이 우주에서 누구나 거쳐야 할 시험이니라
그대 자신의 균형을 유지하라
몸, 마음, 정신, 영혼 그 어느 한 곳에도 치우침 없이
모두 강하고 순수하고 건강해야 한다
건강하게 단련된 육체는 마음을 강하게 만들고
영혼이 풍요롭게 성장하여 마음의 아픔이 치유 되게 하라
의식의 풍요로운 성장은 마음의 상처를 치유하느니라.
결정을 내릴 때는
그대가 원하는 모습과 어떻게 대응할 것인가에 대해
깨어있는 의식으로 하라
그대 자신의 행위는 바로 그대의 책임이니라.
다른 이의 영역과 프라이버시를 존중하라
남의 물건에 손대지 말라
특히 성스럽고 종교적인 부분에는 간섭하지 말라
그것은 해서는 안되느니라.
무엇보다 그대 자신에게 진실하라
먼저 스스로를 돕고 성장하고 난 연후에
비로서 다른 사람들의 성장을 위해 노력하라.
다른 사람의 종교적 신념을 존중하라.
자신의 신념을 다른 사람에게 강요하지 말라.
그대에게 주어진 행운을 다른 이들과 나누어라.
항상 자신이 가진 것을 베풀라.

Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind, body and spirit
Practice optimism
Nature is not FOR us, it is a PART of us
They are part of your worldly family
Children are the seeds of our future
Plant love in their hearts and water them with
wisdom and life's lessons
When they are grown, give them space to grow
Avoid hurting the hearts of others
The poison of your pain will return to you
Be truthful at all times
Honesty is the test of one‘s will within this universe
Keep yourself balanced
Your Mental self, Spiritual self,
Emotional self, and Physical self
all need to be strong, pure and healthy
Work out the body to strengthen the mind
Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails
Make conscious decisions as to
who you will be and how you will react
Be responsible for your own actions
Respect the privacy and personal space of others
Do not touch the personal property of others
especially sacred and religious objects
This is forbidden
Be true to yourself first
You cannot nurture and help others if
you cannot nurture and help yourself first
Respect others religious beliefs.
Do not force your belief in charity.
Share your good fortune with others.
Participate in charity.

기존 번역된 국문 문구가 근사해서 그대로 옮기려다, 영문과 맞지 않거나 너무 의역이거나 제각각인 경우가 많았습니다. 그래서, 전체적으로 본래 뜻과 아주 다르지 않는 범위에서 조금씩 다듬거나 수정하였습니다.
현대적이거나 요즘 용어로는 의미 전달이 힘든 글이라, 글자 속 의미를 한참 되새겨야 한다는 것이 재미있었습니다. 그러나, 보고 또 봐도 새로운 의미로 다가오는 아름다운 글입니다. :)
