A piece of History from Northern New Hampshire. The Iron Forge Furnace of Franconia NH
This structure which resembles a tower is an octagonal stone stack you can see on the far bank of the Gale River from the park. This structure housed an iron smelter and actually appears 1805 map of Franconia.
The furnace was built of local granite with the interior lined with firebrick. The gap between firebrick and stone is filled with clay.
