Taking Care of Your Sick Cat

Cats do get sick

When your cat is feeling under the weather, it’s a worrying experience for many. When owning a pet, it is highly likely that at one point or another, they will get sick. The severity of illness can vary but it’s worth being prepared to nurse your kitty at home. While a call and visit to the vet is always priority when taking care of your cat, there are a number of preparations that can be made as precaution at any time to be ready for a situation. Just as you’d keep a first aid box and other provisions in case of illness, your cat companion deserves some thought and care too.

Quiet, comfortable and clean

Preparing the environment for your unwell fur baby is important. Their immune system may be low at this time and they could be feeling a state of unease and vulnerability. Preparing a secluded area that is both quiet and clean is important. Disinfecting an area is essential but not easy to achieve, depending on the house, flooring and available space. Temporary flooring or covering may be recommended to for such a situation. If it’s possible to clean, be sure to use pet safe cleaning agents as they can be potentially harmful to cats.

Giving medicine

Medicine is a big part of treatment for any sick animal and it’s not always easy getting your kitty to take their medication. Tablets should be given as instructed and if not crushed together in with food, manual oral administration will be required. This involves holding the head securely without excessive force, supporting the jaw on both sides. We like to gently stroke and say words of assurance to our cats as we slowly tilt their head back, the result is an open mouth in which a pill can be dropped into. Cats aren’t always cooperative and might want to spit the pill right back out, simply close their mouth using the securing fingers on the jaw and gently apply strokes to the throat to encourage swallowing. Watching a vet do this and getting someone else to help with the process a few times will help to learn the procedure.

Giving liquids

Staying hydrated is very important for cats and in some cases, cats may not want to eat or drink entirely. This can happen to kittens that are teething, resulting in a loss of appetite. For this situation we always keep liquid syringes on hand to hand feed liquids. Pet designed syringes are available from your vet, it’s best to ask what they can offer and what can be source at a local supermarket to stock up in case of an emergency. The procedure for administration via syringe is very much the same as pills, simply hold and tilt while feeding.
