Hi all,
The following pics will show the restoration of a small statue that has been in my family for 5 generations.
It’s a small statue of Ste Rita, the helper of the poor.
When my mother passed away in 2001, this statue was passed to my sister which she’d like to pass down now to my niece.
However, she moved from Sydney to Ballinaand in the process of moving, the statue got damaged.
When I visited my sister last December, she enlisted my help to try and restore it, but I thought I’d give it a try and restore it myself.
The head had completely fallen off and the halo was nowhere to be found.
It had no nose and was missing a hand and part of the top of the veil.
The only think I could think of using was air drying clay, and, mind you, I’m no sculptor but after trial and error, managed to re form the hand, the nose and veil.
The next step was sanding and paint , and this took me a while as I had no brushes small enough to paint the face features as it’s quite a small statue..

I ended up having to trim the smallest brush I had with a pair of scissors and that worked out well.
I made the halo from a thin electrical Cable I found in the garage, which I thought it turned out ok.
After I painted it, I gave it two coats of clear gloss and this was the end result.
Not a masterpiece but bond to last a few more generations, I hope.
Cheers.
