TIC-80 Games is a post series where I review TIC-80 games I play. You can read more about the fantasy computer in this post. and see my latest reviews on the tag #tic80games!
Birkanoid CG is made by Mate Cziner for LudumDare 41.
You can play for free it on Itch.io
The game is a card-based breakout where you have to hit blocks with a ball. The twist is that instead of a paddle, the ball is controlled by randomly drawn cards.
There are 16 levels to play
and you can play them in any order.
When the level starts you draw 5 random cards, each one contains different effect. Choosing move takes a few seconds, and after that the game is slowed down to let you choose your next move. When you use all the cards you draw 5 ones again and repeat the cycle until you win or get defeated.
There are cards for each direction. A card that adds a new ball for a certain amount of time. A card called Snipe which allows you to choose any angle to move the ball(s) to. Also a Shield card which protects you for a certain amount of time.
There are also many types/colors of blocks with different effect too. Hitting a red block gets you an instant DEFEAT which adds some strategy to this game.
I like how Birkanoid CG uses only direction buttons for the whole game. Up being the action button & Down for Pause menu. The art style is interesting and it feels Birkanoid has some quality of life features.
It's a fun game to play and definitely worth your time!
