There is something in caring for an animal that is good for the spirit. People find comfort in cats, dogs, birds, horses. Just about any animal. Not all animals reward in equal measure the care we give them, but caring is a rewarding activity.
I'll confess here that I once had a bunch of mice dumped on me by my daughter, who found herself too 'busy'. She was young and so I took them in. Can you love mice? Yes. The last one died after more than two years, and I was very sad. That mouse did not want to be alone when it was dying. I'm sure it would have loved to have mouse company, but I served in my own 'human' way.
