We bought our house two years ago and knew then that at some point we'd need a new roof. When the time comes for that, we may think about solar. I like the idea of being independent, and also not using fossil fuels, but how independent are you without a battery? I don't understand the technology so much.

We have a lot of outages in my area, because of storms, so what we've done is buy a couple of small batteries, with a portable solar panel. We can attach the panel to either of the batteries in an emergency. The larger battery can run the refrigerator, or small air conditioner. The smaller one can charge small appliances (cell phones, laptop, modem) and run an electric blanket.

I think we need another battery. Not willing to go full cost of a generator.

Anyway, I think this was a good move for you, if you intend to stay put for a while. My husband and I are fully aware that this is a legacy house...the kids are going to get it so we often ask them how they feel about modifications. At this stage in life, one tends to think of how actions affect children and grandchildren.
