Great review of a great movie. There is certainly the issue of arrogance, of playing God. What are the limits of human ambition? Goes back to Adam and Eve. To Prometheus. To Icarus. To Frankenstein. Do we test the limits of what we are allowed? Are we punished when we do?

I think there is another element at play: The horror of losing our very existence, our humanity. One of the plays that has fascinated me for many years is Peer Gynt. Gynt didn't fear dying. He feared losing his 'Gyntness', of being melted down and being erased. I think the horror of The Fly resides largely in the fact that Brundle no longer exists. In the words of Gynt, his 'Brundleness' has been erased.

This is a film about arrogance, and it is also a film that expresses a basic existential fear.

At least, that's how I see it :))
