This devotion to Mary is very familiar to me. My mother's family came from Sicily, and there Mary in many incarnations is an important presence.
My mother told me a story, handed down for generations, where the family village sat at the foot of Mt. Etna. The volcano erupted. Lava was flowing down the mountain. The villagers marched toward the lava with a statue of Mary and prayed. The lava stopped, almost at their feet. At least, that's how the story goes :)
My mother was devoted to Mary all her life, and out of respect for her and that devotion I have a small statue surrounded by flowers in my front yard.
Really interesting that her face is on bandages.
